Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi is set to emerge as the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, presidential flagbearer for the 2027 election after reportedly becoming the only aspirant to purchase the party’s nomination forms.
The NDC officially closed the sale of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for its presidential ticket, with party insiders confirming that Obi was the lone contender at the close of the process.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, recently defected from the African Democratic Congress, ADC, to the NDC, a move that immediately intensified speculation about his 2027 presidential ambition.
While the presidential form sales have ended, the party announced a one-week extension for aspirants seeking governorship, Senate, House of Representatives and State House of Assembly tickets.
In a statement issued by the National Secretary of the party, Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, the NDC said the new deadline for collecting Expression of Interest Forms for other elective positions is now midnight on Sunday, May 24, 2026.
The party explained that screening of aspirants who have completed their forms will begin on Tuesday, May 19, and continue until May 26. Collection and submission of nomination forms for cleared aspirants will run from May 20 to May 26.
The NDC warned that no additional extension would be granted and directed all aspirants to appear for screening and pre-qualification interviews with relevant documents, including educational certificates, birth certificates or age declarations, passport photographs, voter’s cards, party membership cards and curriculum vitae.
According to the party, all submitted documents must be provided in six copies, while screening decisions will consider factors such as competence, character, local political realities and the wishes of the electorate.
The party also instructed its screening committee to reflect its affirmative action policy by considering women, youths and persons living with disabilities during the process.
With no other presidential aspirant reportedly purchasing forms, Peter Obi is now widely expected to emerge as the consensus presidential candidate of the NDC ahead of the 2027 general election.
