Former President Goodluck Jonathan is set to face the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) screening committee on Tuesday after emerging as the party’s sole presidential aspirant ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The PDP faction led by former Minister of Special Duties, Tanimu Turaki (SAN), confirmed that a 14-member committee has been constituted to conduct the screening exercise for the former president.
Among those appointed to screen Jonathan are former Vice-President Namadi Sambo, former Plateau State Governor Jonah Jang and former Minister of Foreign Affairs Tom Ikimi.
Other prominent members of the committee include Chief Olabode George, Babangida Aliyu, Maryam Ciroma, Zainab Maina, Josephine Anenih, Dr Abdul Bulama, Dr Esther Uduehi, Edo PDP Chairman Tony Aziegbemi and Dr Sunday Solarium, while Chief Anicho Okoro will serve as administrative secretary.
Although the PDP statement referred only to a “lone presidential aspirant,” party sources confirmed that Jonathan is the sole contender expected to appear before the committee.
The development comes days after the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, announced that Jonathan had successfully completed the party’s fresh digital membership registration exercise approved by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The PDP faction, which is backed by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, also disclosed plans to screen hundreds of aspirants contesting various elective offices ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to the party, 748 House of Representatives aspirants, 198 senatorial aspirants, 112 governorship aspirants and 2,122 State House of Assembly aspirants will participate in the nationwide screening exercise beginning Tuesday.
In a statement shared on the party’s official Facebook page, the PDP said the screening exercise would commence nationwide at 10:00am on May 19, 2026.
The party added that the Interim National Working Committee had already released the names of members serving on both the screening committees and appeal panels in line with its timetable for the 2027 elections.
Meanwhile, former Imo State Deputy Governor Eze Madumere has declared his intention to contest the 2027 senatorial election under the PDP platform.
Madumere said he was prepared to restore visibility and inclusiveness to the Owerri zone while promising youth empowerment and economic development if elected.
“I have the political reach, capability and capacity to win this election for our great party, the PDP,” he said.
“The people know me. They know my track records. They know what I stand for, which represents equity and justice.”
The former deputy governor expressed confidence that the PDP would secure victory in the senatorial race with the support of party stakeholders and voters across Owerri zone.
