Former Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, has secured the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial ticket for Delta North after a sweeping victory over incumbent Senator Ned Nwoko and Maryam Ali in the party’s primary election ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The primary, held across the nine local government areas in Delta North Senatorial District, ended with Okowa emerging as the clear winner after polling 113,309 votes.
Announcing the results, the APC Returning Officer, Professor Johnbull Tonukari, declared Okowa winner, stating that Senator Ned Nwoko polled 2,612 votes, while Maryam Ali scored 40 votes in the exercise.
According to Tonukari, three aspirants participated in the contest, with delegates casting their votes across all councils in the senatorial district.
He explained that Okowa maintained a commanding lead from the start of the exercise and consistently won across nearly all local government areas.
In Ndokwa East LGA, Okowa polled 9,436 votes, leaving Nwoko with 79 votes and Ali with 15 votes. In Ika South, the former governor recorded 9,763 votes compared to Nwoko’s 19 votes, while Ali failed to secure any vote.
Okowa also dominated Oshimili North with 13,110 votes, while Nwoko polled 287 votes. In Ukwuani LGA, he secured 12,167 votes, with Nwoko scoring 105 votes.
One of the most striking outcomes came from Nwoko’s own local government area, where Okowa defeated him with 5,480 votes against his 1,343 votes.
The former governor further extended his dominance in Aniocha South and Oshimili South, polling 10,353 votes and 11,616 votes respectively, while Nwoko recorded 168 and 74 votes in both areas.
In Ika North East LGA, Okowa secured 26,185 votes, while Nwoko managed just 24 votes. He also won Ndokwa West with 15,199 votes against Nwoko’s 513 votes.
Following the announcement, APC National Working Committee representative in Delta State, Eugene Odo, formally declared Okowa the winner, describing the process as peaceful, transparent, and credible.
Party officials and observers who monitored the exercise commended the smooth conduct of the primaries, noting that it was largely violence-free across the district.
