An Abuja High Court has ordered the remand of a 32-year-old man, Israel Friday, over allegations that he stabbed his neighbour during a dispute, leaving the victim with life-altering injuries.

The defendant was arraigned on charges of attempted culpable homicide following the incident, which reportedly occurred in the Lugbe area of the Federal Capital Territory.

Presiding judge, M. S. Idris, directed that Friday be held in a correctional facility after the prosecution raised concerns about the safety of the victim if the accused is granted bail.

Prosecuting counsel Donatus Abah told the court that the altercation happened in Angwan Tiv, Zone 7, Lugbe, where Friday allegedly stabbed his neighbour, Theophilus Edache, during an argument.

According to the prosecution, the injury sustained by the victim was severe and ultimately led to the amputation of his left hand.

Abah argued that releasing the defendant on bail could pose a serious risk, insisting that the victim is now more vulnerable following the injury and may be unable to defend himself.

The prosecution also maintained that the offence violates provisions of the Penal Code, citing sections relating to attempted culpable homicide.

However, defence counsel Noah Abdul urged the court to grant bail, arguing that the charge is not a capital offence and that his client should be entitled to release under liberal conditions.

Despite the plea, the court adjourned proceedings until May 13 to rule on the bail application and commence trial.

The case highlights growing concerns around violent disputes within residential communities, as authorities continue to emphasise the need for conflict resolution through lawful means.
