A Family Court in Calabar has sentenced a 27-year-old man to life imprisonment for raping a 13-year-old girl, reinforcing a growing pattern of strict judicial action against sexual violence in Cross River State.
The convict, Edidiong Nyojole, was found guilty by Justice Blessing Egwu, who ruled that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.
The incident occurred in the Uwanse area of Calabar, where the victim was attacked in an uncompleted building, according to evidence presented in court.
Prosecutors from the Cross River State Ministry of Justice relied on medical findings, witness testimonies and the defendant’s own admission to secure the conviction.
The Basic Rights Counsel Initiative, which monitored the case, said the court heard how the victim was forcibly taken to the location and assaulted, with an accomplice still at large.
In addition to the life sentence, the court ordered the convict to pay ₦1 million as compensation to the victim.
The organisation described the ruling as a strong signal that the justice system is taking a firm stand against sexual abuse and exploitation.
It also acknowledged the role of law enforcement authorities and the Cross River State Attorney General, Ededem Ani, in ensuring the case was successfully prosecuted.
Speaking after the judgment, BRCI Principal Counsel James Ibor said increasing convictions in the state reflect growing public trust in the legal system.
He noted that more victims are coming forward because they believe offenders will be held accountable.
The ruling adds to a series of recent convictions in Cross River State, as authorities intensify efforts to combat gender-based violence and protect vulnerable individuals.
