Nollywood powerhouse Iyabo Ojo has scored a major box office triumph with her latest film, Return of Arinzo (TROA), which has raked in an impressive ₦104.8 million during its Easter weekend debut. The film’s performance marks it as the highest-grossing movie over the festive period, setting new records for a Nollywood sequel.
Ojo celebrated the milestone on X, thanking fans for their overwhelming support. “TROA opens with ₦104.8m, breaking multiple records in just one weekend. Highest-grossing Easter weekend performance, biggest opening for a Nollywood sequel. This was only possible because of you,” she posted.
The film, distributed by FilmOne Entertainment, confirmed the numbers in a social media post, noting that the debut reflects strong audience engagement across West Africa. “₦104.8M in its opening weekend, biggest Easter opening, and the highest-grossing film of the weekend,” the distributor said.
Return of Arinzo is a sequel to the 2013 Yoruba blockbuster Arinzo, which explored themes of crime, personal transformation, and redemption. The new installment continues the story with a fresh narrative while retaining the original’s mix of Nollywood and Ghallywood talents.
Audience enthusiasm was evident not only in ticket sales but also at the film’s premiere in Lagos, which generated viral social media moments. A notable incident involving Funke Akindele and Toyin Abraham sparked widespread online discussion, adding to the movie’s buzz.
The success of Return of Arinzo underscores a broader trend in Nollywood: sequels that connect with audiences can drive record-breaking earnings, proving that compelling storytelling combined with star power remains a reliable formula for box office dominance.
Film analysts suggest that the film’s performance also highlights the increasing appetite for culturally resonant content, particularly in Yoruba cinema, and its appeal across West African markets.
For Iyabo Ojo, the film’s achievement is more than commercial, it represents her continued influence as both an actress and filmmaker shaping Nollywood’s evolving landscape.
