The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Imo State Chapter, has expressed strong dissatisfaction with Heartland FC’s failure to secure a return to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), calling for immediate structural reforms at the club.

The body’s reaction follows the club’s underwhelming campaign in the Nigeria National League (NNL), where Heartland fell short of promotion, extending their stay outside the elite division.

The situation is particularly significant as it marks the first time in the club’s history that the five-time Nigerian champions have failed to bounce back immediately after relegation, deepening concern among supporters in Imo State.

In its statement signed by Chairman Cosmos Chukwuemeka, Imo SWAN raised concerns over the leadership structure under Coach Emmanuel Amuneke, noting that he has been managing multiple roles simultaneously as Technical Manager, General Manager, and Chairman.

The association acknowledged Amuneke’s efforts, particularly in ensuring timely salary payments, but warned that the concentration of responsibilities on one individual has affected overall performance and efficiency.

It argued that the current setup places unrealistic pressure on the former Nigerian international, while also limiting effective coordination within the club’s technical and administrative structure.

Imo SWAN recommended a clear separation of duties, suggesting that Amuneke either focus exclusively on technical responsibilities or take charge of administration as General Manager.

The body also called for a comprehensive overhaul of the club’s backroom staff, insisting that experienced professionals be brought in to strengthen operations and restore competitiveness.

While commending Governor Hope Uzodimma for appointing a former international footballer to lead the club, SWAN stressed that Heartland’s current situation is unacceptable for a team with its history and pedigree.

The association urged urgent reforms aligned with global football standards to restore the club’s identity and return it to top-flight Nigerian football.
