Unknown gunmen have killed HRH Jesophat Ikegwu, the traditional ruler of Ishinkwor community in Onicha Local Government Area, Ebonyi State. The attack took place on Wednesday night inside the monarch’s palace.
According to sources, the assailants shot Ikegwu through a window during the invasion. The chairman of Onicha Local Government, Ikechukwu Ogbofia, confirmed the killing, condemning the act and calling on residents to remain calm while the police conduct investigations.
SP Joshua Ukandu, Police Public Relations Officer of Ebonyi Command, also confirmed the incident. Ikegwu’s death marks the fifth killing of a traditional ruler in Ebonyi State in recent months.
Last month, the monarch of Ndufu-Alike community in Ikwo Local Government Area was abducted and killed, with his body set ablaze. Nine suspects were arrested in connection to that crime, but authorities have provided no update on their prosecution.
