A shocking crime has rocked Asaba, Delta State, after a suspected kidnapper, Alex Kehinde, admitted to killing an 80-year-old man and extorting N2 million from the victim’s son. The case has sent ripples through the community, highlighting the dangers lurking even in trusted work arrangements.

Kehinde, whose confession was captured in a video released by the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, revealed that he and an accomplice lured the elderly man under the guise of fixing a plumbing issue in his building. The incident reportedly occurred on February 3, 2026.

Speaking in pidgin English during the confession, Kehinde described how they brought the man upstairs, forced him to the ground, and covered his mouth and nose with foam to prevent him from calling for help. The victim suffocated during the attack. After the killing, the suspects stole the man’s motorcycle and mobile phone, selling the latter in Ogbe-Ogonogo market.

SP Bright Edafe provided further details, confirming that the suspects inserted the victim’s SIM card into one of their phones and contacted the victim’s son, demanding a ransom. “After killing this man, they went ahead and collected the sum of N2 million from the son of the victim,” Edafe said, expressing shock at the brutality.

According to Edafe, the crime began when the elderly man hired Kehinde for a renovation project and paid an initial sum of N200,000. As the work progressed, tensions over payments and staffing created a fertile ground for the plot. Kehinde admitted that financial desperation and the influence of his accomplice drove them to commit the heinous act.

The Delta State Police have launched a manhunt for the second suspect and are urging anyone with information to come forward. Meanwhile, the tragic story serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with unverified work arrangements and the rising threat of violent crime.
