A quiet street in Brooklyn has been left reeling after a seven-month-old baby was shot dead while sitting in her pushchair—an incident police say was never meant to target her.

Kaori Patterson-Moore was killed on 1 April in what investigators believe was a gang-related shooting gone tragically wrong, turning a routine outing into a devastating loss that has shocked New York.

Authorities have charged 21-year-old Amuri Greene with three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder in connection with the attack. He has pleaded not guilty during a court appearance on Friday.

Police say the shooting unfolded in the Williamsburg neighbourhood, where two men on a motorcycle were seen riding against traffic before opening fire. Investigators believe Greene was the gunman, positioned at the back of the vehicle.

According to officials, the intended target was someone else entirely—making the infant an innocent victim caught in the crossfire of street violence.

Moments after the shooting, the motorcycle crashed into oncoming traffic. Greene was thrown from the vehicle and later taken to hospital, where he was placed under police custody.

A second suspect, identified as 18-year-old Matthew Rodriguez, was arrested in Pennsylvania and is believed to have been driving the motorcycle. Charges against him are still pending.

Prosecutors have also filed multiple weapons-related charges against Greene, including criminal possession of a firearm and assault, underscoring the severity of the case.

The tragedy has sparked grief and anger within the community. Family members, friends, and residents gathered at the scene for a candlelight vigil, mourning a life cut short and demanding justice.

Beyond the heartbreak, the incident has reignited concerns about gun violence in urban communities—particularly when innocent lives become collateral damage.

For many, the question now is painfully simple: how does a child in a pushchair become a victim of a gunfight?
