The Imo State chapter of the Action Peoples Party (APP) has pushed back against alleged moves to deregister it, insisting that no political pressure can threaten its existence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
State Chairman, Ernest Njesi, made the declaration during a media briefing in Owerri, where he accused members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of sponsoring legal actions aimed at removing the party from the register of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
According to Njesi, the APP remains a legally recognised political party and is fully prepared to participate in the 2027 elections under INEC guidelines. He noted that the party has previously secured elective positions and also participated in the recent FCT council elections, which he said affirms its legitimacy.
“APP is legally and legitimately registered. Only overzealous individuals in the polity are calling for its deregistration,” he said.
The chairman argued that the growing popularity of the party at the grassroots level has unsettled the APC, prompting what he described as attempts to weaken its rising influence in Imo State.
“They are fighting the party because of its formidable existence with widespread popularity and overwhelming acceptability at the grassroots,” Njesi added, expressing confidence that the APP could secure significant victories in future elections.
Other party officials echoed similar sentiments. The State Publicity Secretary, Cajetan Duke, and Legal Adviser, Uche Nwosu, said the party remains focused on promoting policies aimed at economic growth, improved security, and the protection of citizens’ rights.
They maintained that the APP’s agenda is rooted in people-centred governance, positioning it as a strong contender in upcoming elections.
