Examinations at the University of Jos (UniJos) have been suspended following a deadly night-time attack in Angwan Rukuba, Plateau State, which has heightened security concerns across the city.
The university announced the postponement of all exams scheduled for Monday, March 30, and Tuesday, March 31, 2026, after unknown gunmen reportedly killed and injured several residents, including students and staff.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Deputy Registrar of Information and Public Relations, Emmanuel Madugu, said the Vice Chancellor approved the decision in response to the deteriorating security situation.
“The Vice Chancellor has directed that all examinations scheduled to hold on Monday 30th, and Tuesday 31st March, 2026 are postponed, and will be rescheduled accordingly,” the statement read.
University authorities urged students and staff to remain cautious and limit their movements both on and off campus. Members of the university community were advised to avoid early morning outings and report any suspicious activity to the institution’s security division.
Eyewitnesses said the attack occurred around 7:30 pm when gunmen arrived on motorcycles and opened fire indiscriminately on residents going about their daily activities. The assault reportedly left several people dead and many others injured.
In the aftermath, angry youths were said to have blocked major roads in the area, targeting commercial motorcycle riders and passengers, further escalating tensions.
The university confirmed it is working closely with security agencies to monitor the situation and ensure the safety of students and staff. Officials said further updates would be communicated as developments unfold.
The incident has deepened concerns over insecurity in Jos, as residents continue to grapple with the fallout from the violent attack.
