The Social Democratic Party in Imo State has announced a new interim executive to oversee its affairs and strengthen its structure ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Chigozie Ekeogu has emerged as the Interim Chairman, alongside other executive members tasked with driving party membership registration and positioning the party for electoral success.
The development was disclosed by the national youth leader of the SDP and former Imo State Chairman, Ifeanyi Henry Eluwa, who said the leadership change is aimed at strengthening the party’s presence across the 27 local government areas of the state.
According to Eluwa, the new leadership will guide the party towards congress and prepare it for active participation in upcoming elections.
He emphasized that the SDP remains committed to its core principles of social justice and good governance, noting that the party’s ideology is rooted in the legacy of late MKO Abiola.
Eluwa also described the SDP as one of the most stable and democratically structured political parties in the country, adding that its unity gives it an advantage in reshaping political dynamics in Imo State and beyond.
He revealed that over 80 aspirants interested in contesting in the 2027 elections have shown interest in joining the party, citing its stability as a major attraction.
Addressing speculation, the outgoing chairman dismissed rumours that the SDP had merged with the Action Peoples Party, clarifying that the party remains independent but open to forming coalitions when necessary.
Other members of the newly appointed executive include Achonwa Amaobichukwu as Organizing Secretary, Ngozi Amajuoyi as Women Leader, and Bright Nze as Labour and Civil Society Secretary, among others.
In his remarks, Ekeogu expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to strengthen the party’s structures at the state, local government and ward levels.
He assured members that the new executive would work diligently to reposition the party for future electoral victories.
