President Bola Tinubu has reportedly instructed all ministers and political appointees in his administration who plan to contest elective offices in the 2027 general elections to resign on or before March 31, 2026.

The directive covers ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants, personal assistants, directors-general, and chief executives of federal parastatals, commissions, agencies, and companies, as well as other presidential political appointees.

The circular, issued from the office of the George Akume and signed by Ibrahim Kana, Permanent Secretary to the General Services Office, aligns with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, and INEC’s timetable for political party primaries ahead of the elections.

It mandates that all affected appointees submit their formal resignation letters to the office of the SGF no later than March 31, 2026, to participate in party primaries or contest the elections.
