The Ogun State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of a female corps member, Victoria Ariyo, who reportedly died in Abeokuta South Local Government Area.
Ariyo, a member of the National Youth Service Corps, was said to have died following complications linked to a reported abortion. Her body has since been buried at the Kobape Cemetery along the Kobape Sagamu Road in Abeokuta.
Her death has raised concerns, coming less than a month after another corps member, Adeleye Mary, also died under unclear circumstances while serving in the same local government area.
Mary, who was reportedly working at a television station during her service year, was found lifeless at her residence, according to sources. The cause of her death remains unknown.
A source quoted by Daily Trust said Mary’s body was discovered in her apartment, noting that the circumstances surrounding her passing are still unclear.
Meanwhile, another source told The Punch that an NYSC official believed to have had a romantic relationship with Victoria Ariyo, which allegedly led to her pregnancy and subsequent abortion, has been taken into custody by police at the Eleweran headquarters in Abeokuta.
The source further claimed the official was picked up for questioning as part of the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
The spokesperson of the Ogun State Police Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed that the matter is under investigation, assuring that details will be made public as the probe progresses.
The tragic deaths of the two young corps members, who were reportedly close friends serving in the same area, have sparked concern among colleagues and residents in Abeokuta.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of death and to uncover any possible link between the incidents.
