A Local Government Inspector with the National Youth Service Corps, Abass Olalekan, has been arraigned before a magistrate court in Isabo, Abeokuta, following the death of a corps member, Victoria Ariyo.

Olalekan, 43, who serves under the Abeokuta South Local Government Area of the NYSC, was brought before Magistrate A.K. Araba on a two-count charge bordering on conspiracy and attempt to procure abortion.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Ariyo, who was also serving in Abeokuta South, reportedly died from complications related to pregnancy. According to sources, she had allegedly been involved in a relationship with the accused, which resulted in a pregnancy and a subsequent abortion attempt that is said to have led to her death.

Court documents (MA/22/99/2026) alleged that between January and March 2026, Olalekan and others conspired to commit a felony by procuring an abortion, an offence punishable under relevant sections of the Ogun State Criminal Code.

The second count accused him of unlawfully attempting to procure an abortion by supplying drugs to the deceased.

During proceedings, defence counsel Elizabeth Adelabu applied for bail, arguing that the charges were bailable.

The magistrate granted bail in the sum of ₦500,000 with two sureties in like sum, ordering that one surety must be a blood relative while the other must be gainfully employed.

The court further directed that the sureties provide utility bills, sworn affidavits of means, six passport photographs each, and proof of tax payment to the Ogun State Government for 2026.

Olalekan was ordered to remain in custody at the Ibara Correctional Centre until the bail conditions are fulfilled.

The case has been adjourned until April 14 for further hearing.
