At least 10 people have lost their lives and 20 others sustained injuries following a tragic road accident along the Tafa axis of Niger State, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed.

The crash occurred around 8:20 a.m. on Monday along the Tafa–Gujeni route at Malam Tanko, involving a DAF tanker with registration number FKY136XD.

According to the FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, the vehicle was carrying 33 male occupants at the time of the incident.

Preliminary findings revealed that 10 people died on the spot, while 20 others were injured. Three passengers were rescued unhurt.

The accident, which fell under the operational coverage of the Tafa outpost, was attributed to excessive speed, which caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

The Corps Marshal also raised concern over illegal mixed loading, noting that the tanker was transporting both goods and passengers a practice he described as dangerous and unlawful.

FRSC operatives were said to have responded swiftly, rescuing 23 victims alive and clearing the road to restore normal traffic flow.

The injured victims were taken to Umar Musa General Hospital in Sabon Wuse for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited in a mortuary.

Describing the crash as avoidable, Mohammed called it “a painful reminder of the consequences of traffic violations,” urging motorists to adhere strictly to safety regulations.

He warned drivers against using unsuitable vehicles for passenger transport and emphasised the importance of maintaining speed limits to prevent further tragedies.
