Serie A giants Napoli have warned striker Romelu Lukaku that he could face disciplinary measures after failing to report for training following his early return from international duty with Belgium.
The Italian club confirmed in a statement on March 31 that Lukaku did not return to Naples as instructed after leaving the national team camp last week.
“SSC Napoli announces that player Romelu Lukaku has failed to comply with the team’s notice to resume training today. The club reserves the right to take appropriate disciplinary measures, including indefinitely suspending the player from first-team training and matches,” the statement read.
Napoli had agreed with Belgium’s football authorities for the forward to return early to Italy to continue his recovery from minor physical issues. Instead, Lukaku stayed in Belgium, opting to train privately—a move that has reportedly angered Napoli officials.
The club stressed its commitment to professionalism, stating:
“We expect all players to adhere to professional obligations, including attendance at training sessions. We reserve the right to consider taking appropriate disciplinary action and to determine whether the player will continue to train with the team for an indefinite period.”
No official explanation has been provided by Lukaku for his absence, leaving uncertainty over his future at Napoli and availability for upcoming Serie A fixtures. The standoff highlights growing tensions between the club and the Belgian international.
