Kano State, Nigeria – The Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, will preside over the Eid-el-Fitr (Sallah) durbar in Kano State this year, the government has confirmed, as authorities tighten security amid potential threats to the festivities.

The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, said on Wednesday that the decision followed consultations with the Kano Emirate Council and key stakeholders. Intelligence reports had suggested that some individuals might attempt to disrupt celebrations, prompting enhanced safety measures.

“While Kano remains committed to preserving its rich cultural heritage, the government will not compromise on public safety, law, and order,” Waiya said.

The traditional Hawan Idi durbar will be led by Emir Sanusi, starting from Kofar Mata Eid praying ground, proceeding along designated routes to Gidan Shettima, and ending at Kofar Fatalwa within the emir’s palace. The Hawan Nasarawa procession will take place in a modified format, notably without horseback displays, to reduce risks. Meanwhile, other traditional events, including Hawan Daushe, Hawan Fanisau, and Hawan Dorayi, have been suspended due to security concerns.
