Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have raided the Abuja residence of former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, in a move that has stirred fresh political reactions.

The operation took place in Abuja just hours after former Vice President Atiku Abubakar paid a solidarity visit to Malami on Monday, March 23, 2026.

Atiku, who recently returned from Umrah, had led a delegation to welcome the former minister back to the country. During the visit, he criticised the alleged detention of political figures, warning against what he described as actions driven by political differences.

In a statement shared on his X handle, Atiku called on authorities to release former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, along with other individuals he described as political detainees.

“No one should be detained simply because they do not share the same ideology or political platform with the government of the day,” he said.

The EFCC has yet to issue an official statement detailing the reasons behind the raid on Malami’s residence.

However, the development comes amid lingering allegations involving the former minister. Reports have previously linked him to financial controversies, including claims by Abdulrasheed Maina, who alleged that assets associated with Malami represented only a fraction of misappropriated funds.

The timing of the raid closely following a high-profile political visit has further heightened public interest and speculation.

Observers say the incident could deepen political tensions, particularly as Nigeria’s political landscape continues to shift ahead of the next election cycle.
