Nigeria – The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called for the immediate release of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai or his prompt arraignment in court, warning that any delay could undermine constitutional governance and democratic principles.

The party made its position known in a statement issued on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi.

“The African Democratic Congress demands the immediate release of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, or his immediate arraignment in a court of competent jurisdiction. Nothing more. Nothing less,” the statement said.

ADC criticised the handling of the situation by the administration of President Bola Tinubu, raising concerns about respect for the rule of law and human rights. The party questioned the implications for democratic governance if constitutional safeguards are not upheld.

“If this is the democratic character of a government that is seeking another mandate from the Nigerian people, then Nigerians must ask themselves what becomes of the rule of law and human rights when the Tinubu government no longer needs their votes?” the party stated.

Describing the situation as a threat to democratic order, the ADC stressed that personal freedom is a constitutional right and not subject to executive discretion.

“Freedom is not a privilege that is granted at the pleasure of the executive branch. It is a right that is guaranteed by the Constitution,” the statement added.

The party also challenged President Tinubu to demonstrate commitment to constitutional governance, warning that failure to do so could have wider implications for the country’s democratic stability.

In addition, the ADC called on key officials, including the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, as well as the leadership of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) and other relevant agencies, to act in full compliance with constitutional provisions.
