Senator representing Borno South, Ali Ndume, has expressed confidence that the ruling All Progressives Congress will retain power in 2027, arguing that opposition figures have yet to present a convincing strategy to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Ndume said prominent opposition figures within the African Democratic Congress, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi and Rotimi Amaechi, have not introduced fresh ideas capable of shifting the political landscape.
“I am not worried because no one is coming up with anything new,” he said. “Everybody is talking about it; it’s either Bola Ahmed Tinubu or Atiku or Amaechi or Peter Obi. I don’t see anything that they have presented.”
The senator added that while President Tinubu remains firmly in control, opposition parties—particularly the ADC—appear fragmented and lacking coordination.
“The man who is now driving is Tinubu, but those trying to take control… are always present here and there every day,” he said, suggesting internal divisions are weakening their chances.
Ndume noted that although the opposition boasts strong political figures, it has struggled to maintain unity and cohesion, a factor he believes could affect its performance in the next general election.
“So far, even though they have strong personalities, they haven’t been able to get their house in order. You can’t look down on any opponent, no matter how insignificant they seem,” he added.
He also cautioned against complacency, recalling how the Peoples Democratic Party once underestimated the APC before losing power in 2015.
“Remember, that’s how PDP thought about APC at first… Buhari attempted several times but didn’t succeed. So, I’m not writing Obi or Amaechi off,” he said.
Ndume’s comments come amid growing political realignments and early positioning by key actors ahead of the 2027 elections, as both ruling and opposition parties begin to shape their strategies.
