Former Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, has launched a scathing attack on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing him as a “dwarf” in Nigeria’s political history and insisting that he does not belong among the nation’s great leaders.
Dalung made the remarks on Sunday during an appearance on Channels Television, where he was asked whether Tinubu—often portrayed as a political heavyweight and master strategist—could be defeated in the 2027 presidential election.
According to Dalung, political greatness is not determined by tactical manoeuvring or electoral victories but by legacy, governance and service to the people.
“Tinubu is a dwarf in Nigerian political history and he should not be compared with great leaders like Sardauna and Awolowo,” he said.
He argued that a truly strategic leader should have tangible achievements to show, particularly in critical areas such as security and economic management.
“Great leaders build legacies. They serve the people and work for the people. If he is truly a great strategist as being speculated, Nigerians should see that translated into action,” Dalung added.
The former minister said President Tinubu has failed to replicate at the national level whatever success he recorded as governor of Lagos State, stressing that Nigerians are yet to witness meaningful improvements in the economy or security situation.
“Tinubu cannot manage insecurity, the economy, or even a simple palliative programme meant to cushion the effects of his economic policies,” he said.
Dalung further accused the administration of presiding over worsening economic hardship and deepening corruption.
“His strategies should reflect in performance, not in failure. The economy is in shambles, corruption is flourishing. Where exactly has this so-called great strategist impacted positively on the lives of Nigerians?” he asked.
Turning to the 2027 presidential election, Dalung said the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is preparing to challenge Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“I believe there are many people who can challenge Tinubu,” he said.
He disclosed that the ADC has resolved to conduct a transparent and credible primary process ahead of the election, adding that party unity would be crucial.
“We will conduct a transparent primary, and whoever emerges will receive the collective support of the party to challenge Tinubu,” Dalung stated.
Dalung, who served as minister between 2015 and 2019 under former President Muhammadu Buhari, said defeating an incumbent president in 2027 would depend more on opposition unity than on the popularity of any single candidate.
