Ahead of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) area council elections on Saturday, former Prince Adewole Adebayo, a presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, has urged Abuja residents to cast their votes based on competence, integrity, and a proven track record rather than ethnicity, religion, or financial inducements.

Adebayo made the appeal on Tuesday during an event in Gwagwalada, highlighting the election as an opportunity for citizens to reshape grassroots leadership and demand accountability from elected officials.

He recalled that the FCT was established in 1976 under the administration of Murtala Muhammed to ensure equal access to infrastructure and opportunities for all Nigerians, regardless of background or status.

The SDP chieftain pointed out the stark disparities in infrastructure and social amenities between upscale districts such as Asokoro and Maitama and satellite towns like Gwagwalada, stressing the urgent need for policy-driven leadership committed to balanced development.

“Residents continue to grapple with erratic power supply, lack of potable water, deteriorating roads, poorly equipped schools, and rising insecurity,” Adebayo said.

Meanwhile, the SDP chairmanship candidate for Gwagwalada Area Council, Khalid Bala-Gano, expressed confidence in the party’s prospects in the forthcoming elections.

The elections will determine the leadership of the six Area Councils in the FCT, shaping governance at the grassroots level.
