Mixed reactions have greeted the decision of Julius Adamu to withdraw from the Saturday FCT area council election and support his APC opponent, Joshua Ishaku.

Adamu, contesting on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform, announced his withdrawal on Wednesday, citing consultations with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and emphasizing the decision was “in the interest of unity and peace.” He called on his supporters to rally behind Ishaku for a successful election outcome.

Supporters Question Democratic Integrity

Some residents expressed concerns that the late-stage withdrawal undermines grassroots democracy.

“It could either be about money, position or for the interest of some high and mighty, which, unfortunately, is at the detriment of the grassroots people who are hopeful that true democracy prevails,” said Mr James Ambo, a local resident.

Similarly, Mr Elekwachi Stephen argued that such moves demoralize the electorate and suggested the election outcome may have been pre-planned:

“Adamu’s decision, whether personal or a collective one, has wounded many hearts with genuine support for constitutional rights, but obviously, the masses’ views or interests do not count.”

Miss Abigail Dauda also expressed frustration, saying the process has left her indifferent about the election outcome.

Others Praise Adamu’s Move

Conversely, some residents welcomed the decision, viewing it as a demonstration of loyalty and political unity.

“It is no longer about the parties but about individuals with true leadership qualities and vision who can deliver to the people. So we must give our support to better days ahead,” said Mr Caleb Abaji.

Madam Comfort Elias framed the development as the “will of God,” urging all residents to participate actively in the election for the progress and development of the area.

Supreme Court Confirms APC Candidate

The decision follows a Supreme Court ruling on Monday affirming Joshua Ishaku as the lawful APC chairmanship candidate for the FCT area council election. A five-member panel, led by Justice Jamilu Tukur, overturned the Court of Appeal’s earlier decision that had upheld Mr Haruna Audi as the APC candidate, resolving the dispute in a decisive four-to-one judgement.

The Saturday election is now set to proceed with Ishaku as the APC candidate and backing from the former PDP contender, Julius Adamu.
