Uyo, Akwa Ibom – Lagos-based human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong Esq., secretary of the Citizens’ Liberties Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has called on the Akwa Ibom State Government to halt the ongoing defamation trial against Princess God’sown Udoito, describing the suit as unnecessary and a drain on public funds.
Udoito, a Facebook user, faces charges of criminal defamation, publication of false information, threats, and alleged conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace over social media posts criticizing Governor Umo Eno.
Speaking as a trial observer, Effiong urged the state government to focus on developmental initiatives rather than pursuing citizens over social media criticism.
“Governor Eno should understand that he is serving the public and is bound to face criticism. Instead of shutting her down with legal action, he should address the allegations made,” Effiong said.
The lawyer also questioned the relevance of the charge of sedition, noting that the Court of Appeal had previously declared sedition unconstitutional, and argued that defamation is a personal matter requiring a complaint by the individual allegedly defamed.
“This case is a drain on state resources. Prosecuting someone for allegedly insulting the governor diverts attention from more pressing issues,” Effiong added. He further expressed concern over Udoito’s detention, questioning the Director of Public Prosecutions’ opposition to her bail.
During the trial, the first prosecution witness, Emmanuel Nicholas Udo, Esq., Senior Special Assistant to Governor Eno on Legal Documentation, alleged that Udoito’s Facebook videos threatened state security and accused the governor of selling ancestral lands belonging to the Ekid people to a private company, BUA, and embezzling funds.
Udoito’s videos reportedly included claims that she was a custodian of traditional deities invoked against the governor and other officials allegedly involved in the transactions. The prosecution said they petitioned the State Commissioner of Police to investigate the allegations to safeguard public order.
Defence counsel, Akpadiaha Ebitu, Esq., former NBA Eket Branch Chairman, requested additional time to review evidence served via flash drive, citing legal requirements for adequate service.
Following submissions, Justice Winifred Umohandi adjourned the trial to 18th and 19th February 2026 for continuation of hearings and cross-examination of the first prosecution witness.
