The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Lagos State chapter, has renamed its newly completed permanent secretariat after Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, marking a historic milestone nearly three decades after operating without a central administrative headquarters.
The building, officially unveiled as the “Senator Oluremi Tinubu CAN Lagos State Secretariat,” is located in Alausa, Ikeja.
The National President of CAN, Daniel Okoh, declared the complex open, commending the Lagos chapter for its perseverance in bringing the long-awaited project to completion.
According to Okoh, the development consolidates CAN Lagos operations under a permanent structure for the first time in almost 30 years.
“I urge all members to remain united and dedicated to the work of Christian leadership in Lagos State,” he said.
First Lady Reacts
Responding through a representative, the First Lady said the completion of the secretariat ends years of dispute over the land and signals a new chapter for Christians in Lagos State.
Recognition of Key Contributors
A floor of the complex was dedicated to Oluwaseye Yomi-Sholoye, founder of The New Seraph Evangelical Ministries, in recognition of her financial support for the project.
She described the structure as a “fit home” for Christian leadership in the state.
“For about three decades, CAN did not have a befitting secretariat. Today, we have a beautiful structure that will lift the work of God to the next level. It is God’s doing,” she said.
The edifice was completed under the chairmanship of His Lordship Rt. Rev. S.T.V. Adegbite, with the foundation laid on February 17, 2024.
Also present at the event was the Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Alfred Adewale Martins, alongside clerics from various denominations.
Complex Named After Prominent Leaders
The secretariat complex houses multiple structures named after notable personalities, including:
- The main office block named after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu
- Bishop Stephen Adegbite Hall and Event Centre
- The CAN Chairman’s Office named after Senator Tokunbo Abiru
Adegbite described the secretariat as a symbol of unity and administrative strength, urging members to take ownership of the facility and ensure proper maintenance.
Other Projects Named After the First Lady
Since the inauguration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in May 2023, several public projects have been named after the First Lady, including:
- Senator Oluremi Tinubu Renewed Hope Resettlement City, Keffi, Nasarawa State
- Senator Oluremi Tinubu Dream Centre at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife
- Oluremi Tinubu Leather Hub, Lagos
Annual Interdenominational Service
Following the commissioning, CAN Lagos held its 2026 Annual Interdenominational Divine Service themed “Immanuel: God With Us” (Matthew 1:23) at The Apostolic Church Nigeria, Olorunda, Ketu.
In his address, Rev. Dr. Ezekiel Omidina urged Christians to remain steadfast despite economic and social challenges, while prayers were offered for peace, unity, and national development.
The completion and renaming of the secretariat represent a significant administrative and symbolic moment for the Christian body in Lagos State.
