Owerri witnessed more than policy debates as political leaders swapped suits for football kits in a lively novelty match marking Imo State’s 50th anniversary celebration.

The friendly encounter, held at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, featured Local Government Area (LGA) Chairmen under the umbrella of ALGON taking on members of the Imo State House of Assembly. In what turned out to be a tightly contested game, the council chairmen clinched a narrow 1–0 victory over the lawmakers.

The match formed part of activities lined up to commemorate the state’s golden jubilee — a celebration designed not only to reflect on Imo’s history but also to promote unity and camaraderie among its leaders.
