An early morning fire on Friday destroyed about 50 shops at Kwalemar Fatima Simra Market in Dakata, Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State.
The incident comes just days after a prolonged fire outbreak at the popular Singer Market in Kano.
Confirming the development, Chairman of the market’s fire committee, Dauda Haruna, said several small-scale businesses were affected, particularly those engaged in peanut oil refining and plastic and rubber recycling.
“From what we saw initially, about 50 shops have already been gutted, and the fire is still burning. We are still waiting for the Kano State Fire Service to arrive,” Haruna said.
He added that market officials alerted relevant emergency agencies immediately after noticing the fire, expressing hope that firefighters would contain the blaze promptly.
As of the time of filing this report, the full extent of the damage had yet to be determined.
Meanwhile, the Kano State Fire Service had not issued an official statement, and attempts to reach its spokesperson, Saminu Yusif, were unsuccessful.
