ABUJA – A member of the House of Representatives, Anthony Adepoju, has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of acting against the will of Nigerians over the controversy surrounding electronic transmission of election results.
Adepoju, who represents Ibarapa Central/Ibarapa North Federal Constituency of Oyo State and serves as Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Federal Character Commission, made the remarks during an interview on Arise Television monitored on Tuesday.
He was reacting to the decision by the National Assembly to retain manual transmission of election results, a development that has sparked heated debate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Rowdy Session in the Green Chamber
Proceedings in the House of Representatives turned rowdy as lawmakers clashed over a motion seeking to rescind the passage of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill. Members of the APC and opposition parties engaged in a heated exchange over the mode of transmitting election results.
Reacting to the development, Adepoju alleged that the events on the floor of the House were not bipartisan and described them as detrimental to Nigeria’s democratic progress.
“We want Nigeria to have trust in our democracy and elect the leaders that they want,” he said.
He further stated:
“What played out in the National Assembly is the APC trying to go against what Nigerians want. I think Nigerians all saw what happened at the floor of the House. It was definitely not bi-partisan.”
The lawmaker described the development as a setback for democratic gains made since 1999, warning that any move perceived as undermining free and fair elections would erode public trust.
“If we at this point of our democracy can be thinking of having elections that may not be free and fair, then it’s a big shame,” he added.
The debate over electronic transmission of election results continues to generate strong reactions from political stakeholders, with concerns about transparency and credibility dominating discussions ahead of the next general elections.
