Kano State’s Commissioner for Information, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, has called on Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo to step down, following Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking during a special programme on Muhasa Radio, Waiya stressed that the governor and deputy governor are elected on a joint ticket and are expected to belong to the same political party. The recent divergence, with Gwarzo remaining aligned with Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), prompted the call for resignation.

“The system of a governor and deputy governor is one ticket; they move together,” Waiya said. “The governor chooses his running mate, so they are expected to stay on the same path and in the same party.”

He added that if the deputy governor does not agree with the governor’s political realignment, resigning would be the honourable course of action. “If someone says he will not follow this journey, then we expect him to resign. If you say you don’t agree with your leader, your integrity should guide you to step down,” the commissioner said.

Waiya also hinted that the political realignment could pave the way for resolving the long-standing Kano Emirate crisis. He suggested that unity within the government would facilitate reconciliation, adding that some traditional leaders might either step down or embrace the process.

“I assure you that very soon, the Kano government will resolve the issue of the Kano Emirate because we are now one,” Waiya said.
