Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has projected a dramatic turnaround in the country’s economic fortunes, declaring that Nigeria could begin lending money to other nations as early as 2026. Her comments came during a high-profile ceremony in Ile-Ife, Osun State, where she was honoured with the title Yeye Asiwaju Gbogbo Ile Oodua.

Speaking after the installation, Mrs Tinubu said the nation had entered what she described as a “season of joy,” expressing confidence that President Bola Tinubu’s administration would usher in significant growth within the next two years. She assured Nigerians that ongoing reforms would soon translate into prosperity strong enough to position the country as a financial supporter of others.

The event formed part of activities marking the 10th coronation anniversary of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and attracted some of Nigeria’s most influential political and traditional figures. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the wife of the Vice President Nana Shettima, and former First Lady Patience Jonathan were among the dignitaries in attendance.

The Ooni praised Mrs Tinubu for her long-standing support and influence within the Yoruba cultural space, noting that her new title reflected her contributions to the region. The Sultan of Sokoto offered prayers for both the monarch and the country, calling for unity and peace at a time of economic difficulty.

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke described the Ooni as a cultural reformer who has projected Yoruba heritage globally. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving infrastructure in Ile-Ife, highlighting ongoing road projects and a nearly completed flyover aimed at boosting development in the ancient city.

Mrs Tinubu’s remarks come at a time of national debate over economic reforms and the rising cost of living, with many Nigerians watching closely to see whether the government’s promises of recovery will materialise within the projected timeline.
