Newly elected Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) President, Abubakar Yakubu, has reportedly been taken into police custody following a car accident in Surulere, Lagos, that left a pedestrian dead.

Yakubu, who won the AGN presidency in a tightly fought contest against actress Rita Daniels, was said to be driving when the collision occurred on Tuesday. Details surrounding the crash remain unclear, with authorities yet to issue an official statement.

The election that brought Yakubu to office ended with a narrow margin: he secured 116 votes, while Daniels received 113. Three ballots were declared invalid.

His emergence marked a historic shift in the Guild’s leadership, making him the first Northern Nigerian to occupy the presidency since the association’s registration in 1998 — a position previously dominated by Southern actors.

Reports from the Surulere community indicate that the victim died at the scene, prompting immediate police intervention and Yakubu’s subsequent arrest. Eyewitness accounts are yet to be independently verified.

The Lagos Police Command has not released formal details regarding the circumstances of the crash or whether charges will be filed, fueling speculation and concern within Nollywood circles.

Yakubu’s arrest comes only days after his victory was announced, casting a cloud over what was expected to be a celebratory moment for the Guild’s new leadership.
