The Imo State Police Command has confirmed that operatives attached to its Tiger Base unit are under investigation for alleged unprofessional conduct, including torture, extortion, and other abuses. The probe was announced by the state police spokesperson, DSP Henry Okoye, during a live phone-in programme on Hot FM, Owerri.
Okoye revealed that the Nigerian Police Force’s Force Reform Committee is leading the investigation following widespread calls on social media for the unit’s disbandment. The committee has been tasked with verifying allegations and holding any offending officers accountable.
“The Inspector General of Police has ordered the investigation of the Tiger Base unit to verify the allegations. We appeal to citizens to formally submit their complaints so that offenders can face sanctions,” Okoye said. He stressed that complaints must be documented to ensure proper action is taken.
Tiger Base, he clarified, is an operational call sign for the state’s anti-kidnapping unit, tasked with combating kidnapping, armed robbery, and other violent crimes. The spokesperson assured that any officers found culpable will face disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal.
Okoye also acknowledged that he receives over 200 calls daily from residents reporting violations by police officers. He urged citizens to report misconduct to unit heads, area commanders, divisional officers, or other supervisory authorities to ensure proper documentation and action.
On highway safety, Okoye assured travellers that the Owerri-Aba Expressway has been heavily secured, describing it as “the safest route in the state.” He said multiple tactical units and checkpoints have been deployed, and officers have been reminded to maintain professional standards.
The police spokesperson emphasized the command’s commitment to professional conduct and public safety, urging citizens to cooperate by reporting abuse and supporting efforts to maintain law and order across Imo State.
