Nigeria’s main labour body, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has begun mobilising supporters in Abuja for a nationwide protest over the country’s worsening security situation.
Union members and civil society activists gathered early on Tuesday at the NLC National Secretariat in the federal capital, where the demonstration is set to formally commence.
Leading the assembly is NLC President, Joe Ajaero, joined by prominent activists and allies from various civic groups demanding urgent action on insecurity.
Among the notable figures present is Omoyele Sowore, alongside members of the Revolution Now Movement, adding to the growing crowd at the protest ground.
A visible security presence has been deployed around the area, with operatives from the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Department of State Services stationed to monitor the situation.
The protest follows the NLC’s earlier announcement designating 17 December for a coordinated nationwide action to draw attention to persistent attacks, kidnappings and other security challenges affecting communities across Nigeria.
Organisers say the demonstration is aimed at pressuring authorities to take decisive steps to safeguard lives and property, as protesters prepare to take their message beyond the capital in the coming hours.
