A Nigerian delegation led by Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar has begun consultations with United Kingdom authorities on the potential transfer of former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, to Nigeria to serve the remainder of his prison sentence.

The delegation’s visit to the UK includes meetings with the UK Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Justice, with additional discussions planned with other key officials regarding Ekweremadu’s incarceration.

“Consultations are still ongoing with UK authorities on the matter. An appeal for prisoner exchange for him to serve the remainder of his term in Nigeria has been tabled,” said Alkasim AbdulKadir, spokesman for Minister Tuggar, confirming the talks to Arise Television.

Ekweremadu was convicted in 2023 for organ trafficking in the UK, alongside his wife and a medical professional. His case has drawn both national and international attention, prompting diplomatic engagement by the Nigerian government.

The consultations are part of broader efforts by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to explore legal avenues that could allow Ekweremadu to complete his sentence in Nigeria under applicable prisoner transfer agreements.
