The United States Embassy in Nigeria has assured that visa processing and passport services will continue uninterrupted despite the ongoing partial shutdown of the US government.

The reassurance followed widespread concern among Nigerians that the budget impasse in Washington could disrupt travel plans, student departures, and other consular services.

In a statement posted on its official X account on Wednesday, the embassy confirmed that scheduled services remain active. “At this time, scheduled passport and visa services in the United States and at U.S. Embassies and Consulates overseas will continue during the lapse in appropriations as the situation permits,” it said.

However, the embassy noted that its social media channels would not be updated regularly until government funding is restored, except in cases involving urgent safety or security information.

The shutdown, which began after US lawmakers and President Donald Trump failed to reach a budget deal, was triggered by disagreements over Democratic demands for expanded health care funding, which Republicans strongly opposed.

While the closure has forced several federal agencies to suspend operations, essential services such as the military, postal service, Social Security, and food stamp programmes remain unaffected.

The embassy urged Nigerians to visit travel.state.gov for the latest updates on consular services, including visa appointments and passport processing.
