The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos has been thrown into mourning yet again following the death of Mrs. Adebimpe Akintola, Council Manager of Coker-Aguda LCDA and Chairman of the Forum of Council Managers in the state.
Akintola, who was widely respected as the administrative and accounting head of her local council, reportedly died on Monday, September 29, after a brief illness.
The Forum of Council Managers confirmed her death in a statement on Tuesday, saying: “With total submission to the will of Allah, we announce the passing of our Chairman, Mrs. Adebimpe Akintola. She served as the Council Manager of Coker/Aguda LCDA until her death.”
Her Janazah prayer took place on Tuesday at Al Kitab Mosque, Eleshin, after the Zuhr prayer, followed by her burial at the Equitable CDA Muslim Cemetery, Igbe Lara.
Her colleagues described her as a dedicated administrator and a huge loss to grassroots governance. Council Managers in Lagos oversee the administrative and financial structures of the 20 local governments and 37 LCDAs.
Akintola’s death marks the fifth loss of a female APC grassroots official since late July, sparking concern and unease within political circles. The recent string of deaths includes:
Aug 13: Mrs. Oluwakemi Rufai, Councillor, Ward C, Ibeju-Lekki.
Aug 18: Mrs. Zainab Shotayo, Councillor, Ward C, Odiolowo-Ojuwoye LCDA.
Sept 20: Princess Oluremi Ajose, Vice Chairman, Badagry West LCDA.
Sept 21: Mrs. Basirat Oluwakemi Mayabikan, Councillor, Ward F, Somolu.
The succession of deaths has raised questions and deepened anxiety within Lagos APC ranks, with grassroots leaders calling it a “dark and painful period” for local governance in the state.
