The Federal Government has summoned all domestic airlines to a high-level meeting in Abuja following a surge in flight disruptions and unruly passenger behaviour across the country.
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), which issued the directive, confirmed that the meeting will take place on Wednesday at its headquarters. According to the Director of Public Relations and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, the gathering will tackle multiple concerns affecting airline operations and passenger experience.
“The NCAA has invited all domestic airlines to a meeting in Abuja slated for tomorrow, Wednesday,” Achimugu said in a post on his official X account, stressing that the session will be compulsory for operators.
At the top of the agenda are cases of unruly passenger behaviour, poor handling protocols, and unresolved complaints over refunds and compensation. The regulator is expected to outline stricter measures to protect consumer rights while also ensuring safety and order at airports.
The move comes amid mounting public frustration with frequent delays and cancellations, issues that have strained relations between airlines and travellers. In some cases, angry passengers have taken matters into their own hands, resulting in clashes with airline staff and chaotic airport scenes.
On Monday, Achimugu warned that the NCAA had received a fresh mandate from the Federal Government to “name and shame” defaulting airlines. He also disclosed that carriers responsible for flight disruptions would face sanctions going forward.
The Abuja meeting is expected to mark a turning point in the regulator’s approach, as authorities push to restore discipline, strengthen consumer protection, and rebuild public confidence in Nigeria’s aviation industry.
