Imo State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Declan Emelumba, has assured residents that the state government will not spare any criminal element, declaring that perpetrators of violence, killings, and insecurity will face the full weight of the law. His comments came during a live appearance on Channels TV’s Lunchtime Politics on Thursday, August 7, 2025.

Emelumba responded to questions surrounding recent unrest, particularly the tragic killing of seven people in Ideato North Local Government Area. He noted that while the crime shocked the state, justice is already in motion, as security agents tracked and arrested the key suspect behind the heinous act. “Yes, it took some time, but the important thing is that he was arrested. The government must be commended for its determination,” he said.

The commissioner acknowledged that security challenges persist but maintained that the current administration under Governor Hope Uzodimma has made significant progress in restoring order. He pointed to increased surveillance, military collaboration, and community policing initiatives that have gradually disrupted the operations of armed criminal gangs.

“Imo is not entirely free of security breaches, but we’ve come a long way from where we were in 2021 and 2022. Back then, there were daily attacks and killings. Today, criminal activities have drastically reduced, and this is not by accident. It’s the result of strategic and consistent government action,” Emelumba asserted.

The commissioner said government intelligence agencies have successfully dismantled multiple hideouts of criminal groups in Orsu, Njaba, and parts of Okigwe. According to him, a special tactical force deployed in June has led to dozens of arrests, recovery of weapons, and disruption of kidnapping syndicates.

He further warned that those who think they can destabilize the state with violence or politically motivated criminality will be met with force. “There is no hiding place for terrorists, arsonists, or fake agitators. Anyone who spills blood or threatens peace in Imo will be tracked, smoked out, and punished.”

Emelumba urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement. He also called on civil society and traditional rulers to support peacebuilding efforts, adding that the government is fully committed to safeguarding lives, properties, and the future of Imo’s youth against manipulation and destruction.
