A historic moment unfolded on Saturday, July 26, as the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) honoured one of its most prominent alumni, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, by naming its ultra-modern convocation arena after him during its 35th Convocation and 50th Anniversary celebration.
The landmark event was officiated by the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (retd), who described the edifice as a reflection of Wike’s enduring legacy in education and infrastructure development. The arena, conceived and constructed during Wike’s tenure as governor, now stands as a symbol of transformation and vision at the heart of UNIPORT’s Choba campus.
Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, praised the impact of Wike’s administration on the university’s development. “This arena, built under the Wike administration, transforms our convocation experience. It’s a symbol of what visionary leadership can offer a learning institution,” he declared.
In his keynote remarks, Admiral Ibas highlighted the importance of the newly inaugurated arena beyond ceremonial functions. “It will be the ground where policy dialogues, innovation showcases, and transformational leadership are shaped. It’s not just a venue — it’s a crucible of future possibilities,” he said to applause.
Wike, visibly emotional while receiving an Honorary Doctorate of Political Science (D.Sc Honoris Causa), expressed heartfelt gratitude. “This institution gave me the foundation I stand on. To be honoured in this manner by my alma mater is deeply humbling — for me, my wife, and my entire family. This is one of the most treasured recognitions I have ever received,” he stated.
Reflecting on his journey from student to national figure, Wike urged all alumni to emulate a culture of giving back. “Whenever I’ve had the means, I’ve given freely to this university. We must build institutions that last longer than our personal ambitions,” he said, receiving a standing ovation.
Other distinguished personalities conferred with honorary doctorate degrees include Nigeria’s First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, and former Katsina State Governor Aminu Masari. The ceremony attracted academic icons, government officials, and diplomatic representatives, turning UNIPORT’s golden jubilee into a festival of legacy, pride, and renewal.
