Tension gripped Komu community in Oyo State following the tragic death of 26-year-old Amani Mubarak, who was fatally shot by a police corporal during a heated altercation on Saturday, June 29, 2025. The incident occurred near Abuja Leather Company along Ajetiroad, sending shockwaves across the local area.
Eyewitnesses revealed that Corporal Rasaq Mumuni, attached to the 4th Police Mobile Force (PMF), had been stationed at a pin-down point when he was called to intervene in a dispute involving several young men. During the effort to restore calm, one of the individuals allegedly attempted to disarm the officer, triggering an unintended firearm discharge.
The bullet struck Mubarak in the right buttock, leaving him critically injured. He was immediately rushed to the Baptist Medical Centre in Saki for emergency treatment. Despite medical efforts, Mubarak succumbed to his injuries on the evening of Sunday, June 30, around 7:30 PM.
Confirming the development, the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer stated that Corporal Mumuni has been taken into custody as internal investigations commence. The Police Command also assured the public that due process will be followed, promising transparency and justice in handling the case.
Local residents expressed anger and grief over the incident, calling for a thorough and impartial investigation to prevent a repeat of such occurrences. Human rights groups and community leaders have also weighed in, urging authorities to address issues of police handling of firearms during public interventions.
