Shock gripped residents of Lagos Island on Sunday, June 30, 2025, after a 43-year-old man, Pere Faruk, was found dead in his room shortly after he allegedly poured acid on his girlfriend during a domestic altercation. The disturbing incident happened around 5:40 PM at No. 8 Messy Street, sparking panic in the neighborhood.

Eyewitnesses revealed that Faruk attacked his partner, identified as Kemi Bashiru, following what many described as a heated disagreement earlier in the day. Neighbors said screams filled the air as the victim was seen staggering out of the apartment with severe burns.

Family sources confirmed that Pere Jeli, Faruk’s younger brother who lives nearby at No. 9 Igbosere Street, was alerted by concerned residents and rushed to the scene. By the time he arrived, Faruk had already ingested a substance believed to be Sniper insecticide, leading to his sudden collapse.

Kemi Bashiru, fighting for her life, was rushed to the same hospital and is currently receiving critical care for her injuries. Doctors described her condition as stable but serious, with extensive acid burns affecting multiple parts of her body.

The Lagos State Police Command has since launched a full-scale investigation to unravel the circumstances leading to the tragic incident. Detectives are gathering witness statements and have secured the scene for forensic examination.

Community leaders and women’s rights advocates have condemned the violence, urging victims of domestic abuse to speak up and seek help before situations escalate into fatal tragedies. The Lagos State Domestic Violence Response Unit has also expressed readiness to assist the victim with post-recovery support.
