President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will host Nigeria’s Super Falcons at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa on Monday, following their electrifying 3-2 comeback win against Morocco in the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final. The reception comes less than 48 hours after the team secured Nigeria’s record-extending 10th WAFCON title on Moroccan soil.
The Super Falcons arrived back in Abuja late Sunday night, where a hero’s welcome awaits them. The reception will include players, coaching staff, and officials from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). Tinubu, according to Presidency sources, will personally decorate the players with national honours and announce substantial financial rewards during the ceremony.
Before the final, President Tinubu approved the immediate payment of all outstanding allowances and bonuses owed to the team—sending a strong message of support that many believe spurred the Falcons to victory. Several players had previously voiced frustrations over delayed payments, and the President’s intervention has been widely praised by fans and sports stakeholders.
The Saturday night final, played at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, saw the Super Falcons pull off one of the most dramatic comebacks in tournament history. Down 2–0 within the first 30 minutes, Nigeria fought back with goals from Uchenna Kanu, Asisat Oshoala, and a stunning 87th-minute winner from Rasheedat Ajibade.
With this victory, Nigeria cemented its dominance on the continent, lifting the WAFCON trophy for the 10th time since the competition’s inception in 1991. The Falcons now remain unbeaten in 18 consecutive WAFCON matches and have scored 19 goals in the 2025 edition—more than any other team.
Celebrations have erupted nationwide, with trending hashtags such as #SuperFalcons10th, #NaijaQueens, and #WAFCONChampions taking over social media. Many Nigerians, including celebrities and politicians, have taken to their platforms to call for long-term investment in women’s football and better welfare for female athletes.
Monday’s presidential reception is expected to be televised nationally and streamed across official government social media platforms. It will not only honour the team’s triumph but also serve as a rallying point for renewed commitment to the development of women’s sports across Nigeria.
