Bernardo Silva has been handed the captain’s armband at Manchester City by manager Pep Guardiola, following the exit of Kevin De Bruyne whose contract officially expired this summer.
The decision comes after weeks of speculation over who would succeed De Bruyne, a dressing room leader since 2019. Guardiola reportedly bypassed the usual player vote and made the decision himself, placing his full trust in Silva’s experience, commitment, and influence on and off the pitch.
Silva, 30, has been with the club since 2017, making over 350 appearances and playing a crucial role in City’s historic treble-winning season in 2023. The Portuguese international has long been admired for his tireless work rate and tactical intelligence, earning the respect of both teammates and coaching staff.
Alongside the new skipper, Guardiola appointed three vice-captains for the 2025/26 season: centre-back Ruben Dias, midfield maestro Rodri, and star striker Erling Haaland. The blend reflects Guardiola’s aim to balance seniority with long-term squad influence as City enters a new leadership era.
Despite Silva’s status, his future remains uncertain. His current contract is set to expire in June 2026, and although he has rejected offers from PSG, Al-Hilal, and even a romantic return to Benfica in the past, City are yet to reach an agreement on a contract extension. Talks are ongoing, but his appointment as captain is seen as a statement of intent from Guardiola.
The club legend De Bruyne ended his nine-year stay at the Etihad with five Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and the UEFA Champions League. His exit has left a notable leadership gap, which Guardiola believes Silva is mentally and tactically suited to fill, at least for the short term.
If Silva leaves next summer without renewing his contract, this could be his final campaign at the heart of the blue revolution. But for now, City fans will watch him lead out the team with pride, starting with their Community Shield clash on August 3 against Arsenal.
