Jurgen Klopp could be the spark Manchester United desperately need, says former Arsenal defender Martin Keown, who believes the Red Devils must ditch Ruben Amorim and turn to the experienced German tactician to revive their flailing fortunes.

Keown’s comments come in the wake of a dismal 2024/25 campaign for United, who finished 10th in the Premier League and fell short in Europe, losing the UEFA Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur on May 21. The failure to win silverware has raised fresh doubts about Amorim’s suitability for the Old Trafford job just one season into his tenure.

Speaking on talkSPORT on Monday, June 2, Keown did not hold back in his criticism. “I’m still concerned that maybe he [Amorim] isn’t the right man for Manchester United. The number of games they lost last season tells a story,” he said. “They need a manager with proven pedigree at the top level—and Klopp fits that profile perfectly.”

Klopp, who stepped down from Liverpool in May 2024 after nearly nine years in charge, remains without a club. During his Anfield reign, he won every major trophy available, including the Premier League in 2020 and the Champions League in 2019. His reputation for building world-class teams from struggling sides only strengthens Keown’s argument.

“Why not Klopp?” Keown asked. “He’s done a rebuilding job before. He could come into this United setup and completely transform it. That dressing room needs leadership, charisma, and vision—and Klopp has all three in abundance.”

Many United fans have expressed growing frustration over Amorim’s rigid tactics and poor domestic performances, particularly in big games. Though Amorim was praised for Sporting CP’s success in Portugal, critics argue that he has yet to prove himself in one of Europe’s top leagues.

With a new season just weeks away and major sponsorship deals on the line, pressure is mounting on the club’s board to rethink its managerial strategy. Whether they’ll make a bold move for Klopp remains to be seen, but the calls are growing louder.
