Nigerian rapper and activist, Folarin Falana, better known as Falz, has addressed swirling rumours linking him to controversial crossdresser Bobrisky, insisting he had no prior relationship with the social media personality and was only acting out of compassion when he took Bobrisky’s message while the latter was detained. The shocking revelation came during a no-holds-barred interview on Arise TV on Wednesday, June 4, 2025.

The controversy exploded after outspoken internet critic VeryDarkMan (VDM) leaked an alleged audio conversation between Falz and Bobrisky in 2024, sparking unverified allegations of a romantic link between both figures. Falz has since sued VDM for defamation, with the case now heating up in a Lagos court. According to Falz, the legal battle is progressing, with the defendant failing to present a formal defence and instead filing a preliminary objection that has now been dismissed.

Falz clarified that Bobrisky had only reached out via Instagram while in detention, requesting assistance—similar to the thousands of messages Falz regularly receives from people in distress. “It wasn’t a unique situation,” he explained. “I get many of these DMs from people who need legal or public help. I acted out of compassion, nothing more.”

The defamation case, filed by Falz alongside his father, human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), aims to restore the rapper’s integrity and send a message against malicious online falsehoods. With the court rejecting VDM’s challenge on jurisdiction, the matter is now set for trial unless a defence is entered swiftly.

Responding to the fallout from the viral audio, Falz expressed disappointment that his gesture of empathy was twisted into an online spectacle. “Maybe I’ll be more cautious moving forward. But if I allow this to make me stop helping people, then the trolls win. That’s not who I am,” he said.

Legal analysts suggest the case could become a landmark decision on digital reputation and defamation in Nigeria’s social media era, especially as public figures increasingly face smear campaigns masked as “leaks.” So far, neither Bobrisky nor VDM has publicly responded to Falz’s latest comments.

The rapper has continued to use his platform to speak on national issues, including injustice, governance, and youth rights. But this latest saga may redefine the boundaries between compassion and caution for celebrities in Nigeria’s digital battleground.
