Worshippers fled in terror on Sunday, June 15, 2025, as the United Methodist Church Nigeria (UMCN) in Jantaro community, Taraba State, collapsed mid-service during a violent windstorm, leaving several congregants injured.

The incident occurred behind the Police Divisional Office in Mutum-Biyu, headquarters of Gassol Local Government Area. Witnesses say a heavy downpour accompanied by fierce winds hit the area just as the church was in session, weakening the structure and bringing it crashing down with a thunderous noise.

Panic ensued as parts of the roof caved in, with timber and bricks scattering across the pews. While no fatalities were recorded, many sustained injuries ranging from head wounds to broken limbs. Victims were quickly evacuated to Mutumbiyu Referral Hospital, with others reportedly receiving treatment from a traditional bone setter nearby.

“We were in the middle of worship when the roof began shaking, and before anyone could react, it collapsed,” said Rebecca G., a survivor. “People were screaming, running. It was chaos.”

Local residents expressed concerns over the structural integrity of the building, citing poor maintenance and a lack of reinforcement against extreme weather—an increasing threat in the region due to climate change. The church, which had been standing for over 15 years, had reportedly shown signs of wear before the incident.

As of the time of this report, no official statement has been released by local authorities or the UMCN leadership. Emergency services were seen inspecting the site, and church elders have convened to determine next steps.

The incident has left the Jantaro community shaken, prompting calls for urgent inspections of similar structures to prevent future tragedies during the rainy season.
