Ogun State Television (OGTV) has been plunged into mourning following the sudden death of Mrs. Bukola Agbakaizu, a respected broadcast journalist, who collapsed on duty and was confirmed dead at the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, on Monday, May 13, 2025.
Mrs. Agbakaizu, 52, reportedly slumped at the station’s premises while preparing for her afternoon shift. Despite urgent efforts by colleagues to save her, she was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. The tragic loss was confirmed in a statement released by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council, on Tuesday.
The NUJ described her as an exemplary professional with deep commitment to journalism and media development. “Bukola was more than a colleague — she was a force of passion and discipline,” said Mr. Bunmi Adigun, Secretary of the NUJ Ogun Council. “Her sudden departure is a terrible blow to the journalism family in Ogun and beyond.”
A veteran journalist, Agbakaizu previously served as Vice Chairman of the OGTV Chapel of the NUJ, and was a serving ex-officio member in the current leadership under Comrade Wale Olanrewaju. Colleagues recalled her as vibrant, energetic, and fiercely loyal to both the pen and the people it served.
Her passing has drawn heartfelt tributes from across the Nigerian media landscape. The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Ogun Chapter, in a statement by Chairperson Mrs. Sekinat Salam, described her as “a journalist driven by compassion, guided by duty, and fueled by excellence.”
Agbakaizu is survived by her two children, an aged mother, and a wide network of professional colleagues and friends. Her death has sparked renewed conversations around occupational stress and health screening for media workers — an issue long overlooked in the high-pressure industry.
As condolences pour in, the legacy of Bukola Agbakaizu remains etched in the memories of those who worked with her and the countless lives she touched through her work. Her final sign-off was not from behind the microphone — but from the field she gave everything to.
