In a statement shared on his Instagram page on May 7, 2025, AY disclosed that he was questioned by the EFCC on May 5, 2025. He expressed gratitude to the commission for their understanding and for granting him a pardon after confirming that the money being sprayed was not linked to the proceeds of crime or any form of illicit funds .
AY acknowledged that spraying money at public events is a common cultural practice in Nigerian celebrations, especially during weddings, funerals, and parties. However, he emphasized that such acts are considered offenses related to the abuse of the Naira under Nigerian law. He urged the public to respect the national currency by giving money responsibly at events .
He further stated that mutilating or abusing the Naira—whether by spraying, tearing, defacing, or mishandling—is not just a cultural practice but also a violation of Nigerian law. Such acts undermine the integrity of the national currency and can have serious legal consequences .
This development comes as the EFCC intensifies its campaign against the illegal handling of currency. Recently, similar invitations were extended to Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo and businessman Emeka Okonkwo, also known as E-Money, as part of the agency’s efforts to curb the abuse of the Naira .
AY concluded by encouraging Nigerians to uphold the dignity of the Naira, which he described as a symbol of the country’s sovereignty and economic stability. He pledged to use his platform to promote awareness about the proper respect and care for the national currency .
